Education-travel brings together the concepts of learning and travel into a unified experience. Aristocrats in the 16th and 17th centuries often sent their children abroad, with chaperones and lecturers, via sailing ships, to expand their knowledge of foreign languages, cultures, art and history (Anderson, 1989 McCourt, 1989). This chapter gives an introduction and rationale for alternative education, followed by a description of the Class Afloat programme and the purpose of this study.Ĭoncern for the education of young people in our society in a world that is rapidly changing each day requires that we, as educators, constantly look for new and better educational approaches.
